Case Study: delivering a secure networking solution for the port of cork
project Background
Onnec has designed and delivered an integrated wired and wireless networking solution for the Port of Cork, the second largest natural harbour in the world.
In 2022, the Port of Cork Company (PoCC) launched its new state-of-the-art Cork Container Terminal (CCT) to support the increase in freight traffic and to deliver more efficient container-handling facilities. The €94 million expenditure was the largest, single investment in marine infrastructure of any Irish port during the last 100 years.
With one of the largest deep-water, multimodal berths in the world (13-meter depth and 360 meters in length), the container vessels that are facilitated in Ringaskiddy are the largest that can be accommodated anywhere in Ireland. The company currently employs 170 staff and on average lifts 650 containers per day. Once fully operational on completion of the M28 motorway in Cork, CCT will have the capacity to process up to 350,000 containers a year.
Constant communication and automated processes are critical for a safe, secure and ‘always on’ operational experience. The network deployed needed to be resilient and secure to meet the needs of this busy port.

For such a challenging RF environment, Onnec, working alongside HPE Aruba Networking and the PoCC onsite teams, constantly adapted throughout the design and deployment phases, to deliver the solution that is in place today and ready for the future capacity expectations of the port.
