Data Centres Power Our Everyday Lives – But They Still Need People
National Data Centre Day is a chance to look beyond the headlines and recognise the infrastructure quietly keeping our digital world running.
When we think about data centres, it can be easy to picture rows of servers, blinking lights and huge amounts of power. And with the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, data centres are increasingly making headlines for the amount of computing power, energy and investment they require.
But data centres are about much more than powering ChatGPT.
From the moment we wake up and check our phones to navigating to work, joining a video call, streaming music or ordering something online, we rely on data centres throughout the day. Behind the instant experience is an enormous, complex network of data centres – but every data centre still needs humans.
Powering business, government and public services
Businesses, governments and public services all rely on data centres for everything from cloud applications and communications to financial services, healthcare, emergency response and cybersecurity.
That’s why, in September 2024, UK data centres were designated Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) – recognising how essential they are to the way our economy and society function.
But behind all this technology is something we don’t talk about quite as much.
People.
The hidden workforce behind our digital lives
AI is helping optimise operations. Automation is improving efficiency. Predictive technologies are helping identify potential problems before they become failures.
But technology doesn’t install a cable. It doesn’t walk into a data hall at 2am to troubleshoot a connectivity issue. It doesn’t coordinate hundreds of engineers across multiple sites when a project needs to accelerate.
People do. Our Onnec teams do it every day.
The hidden workforce behind our digital lives rarely get the same attention as the latest AI chip or hyperscale campus. But without them, none of it works.
And the pressure is only increasing.
The explosion in AI is changing the data centre industry at incredible speed.
- More power.
- More connectivity.
- More density.
- More capacity.
- Faster build programmes.
And increasingly, less time to deliver it.
That means the human element isn’t becoming less important. It’s becoming more important.
Experience matters. Precision matters. Problem-solving matters. And knowing how to deliver complex infrastructure safely, efficiently and at pace matters.
The future isn’t human vs technology. It’s humans + technology.
The data centres of tomorrow will be more automated, more intelligent and more connected than ever before.
But behind every automated system will still be people making decisions. Behind every AI workload will still be physical infrastructure. And behind every successful data centre project will still be a team of people making it happen.
So, this National Data Centre Day, let’s celebrate more than the buildings, servers and technology.
Let’s celebrate the people behind them.
Because data centres might power our digital world. But people, power data centres.
