When we think about data centres, it can be easy to picture rows of servers, blinking lights and huge amounts of power. And with the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, data centres are increasingly making headlines for the amount of computing power, energy and investment they require.
But data centres are about much more than powering ChatGPT.
From the moment we wake up and check our phones to navigating to work, joining a video call, streaming music or ordering something online, we rely on data centres throughout the day. Behind the instant experience is an enormous, complex network of data centres – but every data centre still needs humans.
Powering business, government and public services
Businesses, governments and public services all rely on data centres for everything from cloud applications and communications to financial services, healthcare, emergency response and cybersecurity.
That’s why, in September 2024, UK data centres were designated Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) – recognising how essential they are to the way our economy and society function.
