INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY – Carmen Stan

At Onnec, we’re proud to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day by spotlighting the incredible talent and contributions of our team. Today, we’re featuring Carmen Stan, a Senior BIM Engineer at Onnec. Carmen plays a pivotal role in bringing Data Centre projects to life through precision, innovation, and collaboration.

Before diving into Carmen’s journey, let’s take a closer look at the world of BIM and why it matters.

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is more than just a 3D modelling tool. It’s a digital process that allows engineers, designers, and construction professionals to create and manage data across the lifecycle of a built asset. From early design concepts to construction and beyond, BIM ensures everyone involved is working from the same, most up-to-date information.

At Onnec, BIM helps us deliver complex infrastructure projects – such as high-performance Data Centres – with greater accuracy, speed, and sustainability. It’s especially important in fast-paced environments where coordination between disciplines, reduction of waste, and minimised risk are essential.

Carmen – I’ve been in the engineering field for over 15 years. I started my career in Architecture after completing my MSc in Telecommunications at the University of Bristol. My journey into BIM began around 10 years ago when I started working on Telecom designs for Data Centres. I’ve always been fascinated by the ability to use data to identify patterns, improve collaboration and solve coordination challenges. BIM brings all of that together in such a powerful way.

C – On a typical day, I might be coordinating 3D models, running clash detections, or reviewing designs and drawings to ensure alignment with client requirements and local regulations. One of the parts I enjoy most is collaborating with colleagues across different disciplines to resolve issues and maintain a consistent, high-quality digital model. I really enjoy spotting patterns and resolving clashes – it’s like solving a giant puzzle. Since joining Onnec, I’ve transitioned from working mainly on design-stage deliverables to focusing on as-built models. This feels like a natural progression. I take pride in consistently applying and upholding BIM standards throughout the project lifecycle.
