Onnec appointed as connectivity vendor for hyperscale data centre
When its global expansion strategy revealed a need for increased capacity and diversity, this multinational social media company chose Denmark to host its Data centre campus. Its challenge was finding the right partner to connect eight data halls across 800,000 square feet – scalability and agility were must-haves, but the client also wanted day-two services once the datacentre was operational.
Onnec was selected as connectivity vendor, responsible for installing all Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) cabling as well as network build activities.
The appointment was based on our proven ability to scale in new regions on large structured cabling projects and tailor delivery to the client’s unique requirements – not to mention an end-to-end connectivity service that can continue to support operations after the handover. It was on these merits that, in January 2018, the client chose to turn over the core area to Onnec
Between January 2018 and March 2020, Onnec installed OSP and ISP fibre cabling in all eight data halls, providing internal and cross-building connectivity. Additional installation duties extended to racking, containment, network equipment and patching.
To deliver on time and in budget, Onnec took steps to overcome the scaling demands. Prefabricating network equipment offsite reduced labour peaks and levels, while a dedicated project management team and framework meant Onnec could adapt to changing requirements without compromising on the schedule, cost, or quality.
The result, made possible by our ability to scale in new regions and meet unique network connectivity requirements, is a completed data centre that has increased capacity and diversity for the client.
Installed: • 1200 CPI Racks • CPI and Cablofil Containment Infrastructure • 16 x 3456 OSP Fibre Installed • 350,000 Meter OS2 Fibre (Pre-term) • 48,000 Cat6 Patch Cords
ONNEC EXPANDS ITS STRUCTURED CABLING APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME TO THE UK
Following from the success of our Irish Apprenticeships, which received nominations for the Generation Apprenticeship Employer of the Year Award, Onnec UK has launched its new structured cabling apprenticeship programme in partnership with CNet, specialists in Technical Education for the Digital Infrastructure Industry.
The 18-month course will cover core technical skills required to confidently install, test and certify copper and fibre cable installations whilst working to the correct standards and best practices. Ensuring the desired levels of competency and confidence to install Smart Building technology such as wireless access devices, VoIP telephony, CCTV cameras, door access controls and biometric security systems.
Our apprentices will undertake on-the-job learning and benefit from one-to-one coaching with industry experts; they will also be supported by a thriving community with events, social and mentoring. Upon completion of the course, apprentices will gain a Level 3 – Network Cable Installer qualification.
David Buchanan, Onnec Operations Manager leading the structured cabling apprenticeship, said: “We are passionate about the next-generation of the Onnec workforce. As a rapidly growing organisation, finding and retaining the highest calibre of people is fundamental for the success of our business. Introducing apprentices to the team brings a broader diversity of background and experiences, providing our teams with a fresh perspective.”
We wish our newest apprentices the best of luck as they begin their Onnec career.
year-in-review: onnec highlights from 2022
It’s that time to reflect on 2022 and remember a few highlights of the year. Through strong connections with our global customers and partners, and with the commitment of our global design, project and service delivery teams, 2022 has provided some standout moments.
a new name
In July we successfully united Kedington, ExcelRedstone and LOAD AB services under our new brand Onnec. Bringing 30 years of heritage, experience, and a team of 800+ industry experts together, the company has become better positioned to help achieve our customers’ business ambitions, by focusing on delivering excellence in connected environments for them, across the world.
an expanding team
2022 has been one of our biggest years for net recruitment, with over 150 new starters joining the Onnec team across the world. And we’ve expanded our footprint with new offices in London, Sweden, Germany, and the US. 2023 will see us maintain this level of growth, as we continue to deliver the consistent level of service everywhere for our clients. A local partner on a global scale.
ongoing commitment to future talent
Onnec is committed to growing future talent and making our industry more accessible. This year Onnec Ireland was nominated for Generation Apprenticeship Employer of the Year Award, and three apprentices nominated for the Apprentice of the Year. 2023 looks even better with our apprenticeship programme expanding to our other entities.
“Our apprenticeships scheme creates a fantastic opportunity for us as an employer and for learners alike from a diverse background to enter our industry. We are delighted to have been involved in the evolution of this apprenticeship to date, it is a game changer!” – Colm Lyons, Director at Onnec Ireland.
long standing connected partnerships
It’s been a year of growing relationships, new accreditations and training certifications attained with all our strategic partners. From Onnec winning the CommScope EMEA partner of the Year award, to our Smart Buildings solution Onnec iQ becoming an Accredited WiredScore solution, 2022 has seen many partner highlights which will pave the way for a successful and collaborative 2023.
supporting our charity heroes
Throughout the year, Onnec staff have taken part in different opportunities to raise money for some amazing charities. During April members of our team took part in the Walk All Over Cancer Month and walked 10,000 steps every day. The challenge was a wonderful way to get colleagues more active, improve fitness and wellbeing, and raise money for charity. Other events included walking for Alzheimer’s, donating Lego to local youth centres in Sweden, and even a fundraising hair cut – with one of our Onnec iQ software engineers, Michael Abraham, cutting off his long locks for charity and raising £1,600 for Cancer Research UK.
returning to in-person events
After almost 2 years of virtual industry events, 2022 saw many in person events restart. We enjoyed the return of our customer golf day, an event which we have been running across the UK and Ireland for several years. As well as exhibiting at the Smart Buildings Show in London where the Onnec iQ team demonstrated our Smart Buildings Solutions, and Technical Director John Dente explained our Onnec iQ overcomes the challenges of making legacy, as well as new build, real estate smart.
our inclusion and diversity journey continued
Since establishing our D&I committee in 2020 we have significantly increased our efforts to create an inclusive workplace. This year Onnec was nominated for 3 awards at the 2022 FREDIE Awards: Most Improved Organisation, Diversity Steering Group, and Chief Executive of the year, and was ranked within the Top 100 Most Inclusive Workplaces.
Throughout the year Onnec’s D&I committee provided guidance around multiple awareness weeks, to provide information and advice in conjunction with respective charities. From our Irish team supporting Construction Industry Federation (CIF) Safety Week with a range of toolbox talks, webinars, and on-site events. To celebrating International Women’s Day and getting involved in their #BreakTheBias campaign, with a week of webinars and Day in the Life videos shared by the Onnec women.
2022 was one of sustained growth and 2023 looks to be even better. We couldn’t have achieved this without our wonderful global customers and partners. Thank you and we wish you a safe and fun festive period.
Onnec awarded WiredScore Accredited Solution for Onnec iQ smart technology platform
Delivering SmartScore-certified technology to help customers make their real estate Smart
London, UNITED KINGDOM, November 9th 2022 – Onnec announces that its smart technology platform Onnec iQ has become a WiredScore Accredited Solution. Accredited Solutions are technology providers whose systems and solutions have been benchmarked against WiredScore’s certification standards, enabling landlords, tenants and property professionals globally to use these solutions to align to SmartScore certification and meet smart building requirements today and in the future.
We’re pleased to announce we’ve recently become an Accredited Solution with WiredScore! The SmartScore certification was created in collaboration with the owners and users of the world’s most advanced properties. The certification provides clarity on what constitutes a smart building, guidance on how to achieve the status, and proof of the value it adds to their asset. Our MSI team, utilising our Onnec iQ platform, can now help building owners and users understand, improve, benchmark and promote smart technology in their buildings and developments, to get SmartScore certified.

SmartScore certification, the global standard for smart buildings, helps landlords and developers build cutting edge smart buildings that deliver exceptional user experiences, drive cost efficiency, meet high standards of sustainability, and are fully future-proof.
“Since launching SmartScore – our smart building certification – in 2021, we’ve noticed that ‘smart’ continues to be an opaque subject for the real estate industry,” says Arie Barendrecht, the founder and CEO of WiredScore. “Many continue to seek guidance on how to implement smart buildings, what solution providers to work with, and even what ‘smart’ itself means. We are confident that our Accredited Solutions offering will help to demystify how to successfully deliver a smart building.”

Celebrating 25 years of partnership with CommScope
This year Onnec celebrates a major milestone in our long-standing partnership with CommScope, and wins EMEA Partner of the Year award at the CommScope Connected 22 conference
Cast your minds back – 1997, the Spice Girls were on the radio, Tony Blair was resident in No 10, Ireland hosted the Eurovision and Bill Clinton had the keys to the White House. And yes, it was the start of a great partnership with CommScope.
Time has moved on and names have changed along the way, but our working relationship with CommScope has remained a constant. We believe it is as close today as it was when we joined the SYSTIMAX First Program, which supported the active positioning of AT&T’s PDS Structured Cabling System.
From our first single cable installation to the multi-faceted projects we deliver today, CommScope has been by our side. During this time, our ever-evolving portfolios of products and solutions have together been delivering high-performing networks for our customers.
CommScope has been a partner of ours for over 25 years. We are extremely proud to have them as one of our Strategic Partners helping us to provide reliable and innovative solutions to our customers across EMEA. We can truly depend on them.
Matt Salter, Sales Director, UK, ONNEC
We are proud to hold the Elite Partnership status with CommScope, and over the past 25 years we have had over 280 Onnec staff (some of which are still with us today) trained, certified, and accredited to install the most important CommScope solutions. Together, our staff have accumulated over 1,500 CommScope certificates between them, covering Elite Systimax Infrastructure, IBW, Systimax infrastructure, ImVision AIM and NetConnect Infrastructure as well as activating over 1400 warranty agreements for our customers.
We are very proud to be celebrating 25 years of partnership with Onnec, a partnership that has grown together in support of the evolving requirements of our clients. Onnec delivers professional excellence in all aspects of our solutions, providing confidence to customers that their investment is protected now and into the future.
Adrian Hayes, Sales Director, UK and Ireland, CommScope
This month we are also delighted to announce that Onnec Group has won the EMEA Partner of the Year award at the CommScope Connected 22 conference. The award is a significant recognition for Onnec and a testament to our long-standing partnership with CommScope.
So, we welcome the next milestone in our relationship with CommScope. As Onnec grows its global footprint further, we need to provide a consistent level of service regardless of location, and long standing partnerships will be key.

Come visit us at the Smart Buildings Show
We are delighted to be returning to this year’s Smart Buildings Show, 12-13 October
The Smart Buildings Show is the leading UK event for Smart Buildings, connecting visitors to the latest information and technology in the industry. Since launching in 2017, the show has grown every year, as has the market. With Net Zero target timelines fast approaching, interest in smart building software has surged. To continuously improve building performance, a solution is required that works seamlessly across the multitude of different data sets and variables typically found in commercial buildings. That’s why we developed Onnec iQ.
Onnec iQ was developed by building engineers to solve real-world customer challenges, enabling the operation of a smarter building with cost management, energy, and carbon reduction as primary objectives. Onnec iQ can be custom fit to meet any environment, providing a holistic, unified view of all energy and performance data without the cost of sub-metering. Onnec iQ automates changes to the building systems based on real-time demand, maintaining comfort levels and ensuring a smart enabled building as part of a Net Zero strategy.
We will be on stand B19 with our technology platform Onnec iQ, alongside our partner Allied Telesis, who will be showcasing their portfolio of products, technologies and managed services for smart buildings. Onnec’s platinum partnership with Allied Telesis enables us to provide clients with high-quality networking infrastructure.
Join us in the Connected Management Theatre on Wednesday 12th October between 12:15pm and 1:00pm for our session: “The challenge of making existing real estate smart,” presented by Onnec Technical Director, John Dente.
In this session John will explain how energy and carbon reporting can be improved and show practically how the data can identify what can be done to reduce energy consumption. John will demonstrate a method allowing interoperability between systems and how to improve the cause and effect scenarios for FM teams, as well as allowing tenants or owners to get the best from a building for their users.
We are excited to be returning to the Smart Building Show to demonstrate how Onnec iQ can help customers achieve their carbon-cutting targets. We look forward to seeing you there.
